Freestyle Navigator sets a new course

Last week Abbott received FDA approval of the FreeStyle Navigator(R) Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System in the United States for people with diabetes. This is not the first CGM System around, but it IS the first one that ties in pretty seamlessly to our COZMO pump. It gets us ones step closer to an artificial pancreas. Hurray!

The system is basically made up of two components: a small transmitter that attaches to the body and a receiver that gives you a readout of blood glucose levels and keeps a 60 day record of highs and lows to manage your diabetes regimen.

What's the biggest benefit of using a CGM? I think it's the ability to be automatically warned of the scary drops or spikes in blood sugar levels. The stuff that makes my wife and I commit to waking several times in the middle of the night to test or to do lots of finger sticks during sporting activities.

You can check out all the details at the FreeStyle site or do a comparison of all the available continuous glucose monitoring systems at the Diabetes Mall which has a handy comparison table.
