According to a study recently published in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal Alzheimer's memory loss is linked to a novel, third type of diabetes. The research showed a toxic protein found in Alzheimer's patients removes insulin receptors from nerve cells. The affected nerve cells become insulin resistant and stops brain insulin signaling which is crucial for memory.
The question that immediately comes to mind for those of us dealing with Type 1 diabetes: Does a diabetes diagnosis increase the risk of alzheimer's in our family?
