The New York Times published a good article today that reminds us that taking care of blood sugars is only part of good diabetes control. Two other factors (especially for Type 2 diabetics) is the proper regulation of cholesterol and blood pressure. After all, one of the major complications of diabetes is the increased risk of heart disease. One metric alone cannot guarantee good health in anybody-- including non-diabetics.
One point the Times article did not mention is the emotional and psychological aspects of having a chronic disease. As parents of a diabetic, it's something we always need to keep in mind. That doesn't mean pandering or walking on eggshells with your child. It is, however, like walking a tightrope - something that is continually tricky to manage.
