Promising Research in NC

We had the opportunity to hear Dr. Anthony Atala who is heading up the new Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Fascinating man. Awe inspiring really. Especially with the groundbreaking work he has done in the field of urology.

Dr. Atala has successfully engineered a human ureter, crafted a fully functional, transplanted bladder and most importantly for diabetics- successfully created and transplanted insulin producing islet cells in mice.

The most remarkable part of this process is that Dr. Atala has licked the problem of tissue rejection by making these organs and cells by coaxing the patient's own stem cells to produce the tissue. No toxic immunosuppressive drugs were needed, unlike diabetes treatment with the Edmonton protocol.

Dedicated healers like Dr. Atala keep our hope alive that someday our little Cassie can walk free of diabetes.
