Research Blackmail

We saw an email circulating around the diabetes community about regenerative beta cell research and the accusation that the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or JDRF was ignoring this promising line of research.

Truth be told, I was at first alarmed that an organization my family supports could overlook such an opportunity. But looking more closely at the matter I learned that JDRF certainly WAS pursuing this line of research and had already issued large grants to teams at Columbia University and Harvard.

The author as it turns out was more irate that the non-profit agency hadn't chosen their particular grant application to support.

Parents like me are desperate for a cure for our kids with diabetes and are particular keen on news of a "silver bullet" solution. Frankly I felt like this vulnerability was exploited by the folks who crafted this email to strongarm JDRF for research money.
